| Dr. Gary DeLeo
| | Department: | Physics |
| Team: | Physics |
| Role(s): | Principal Investigator | Team Leader | | Bio: Dr. Gary G. DeLeo has been a Professor in the Department of Physics at Lehigh University for nearly thirty years. During this time, he has served as Associate Dean in the College of Arts and Sciences, and Chair and Associate Chair of the Department of Physics. Professor DeLeo received his Ph.D. from the University of Connecticut with a specialty in theoretical solid state physics. His earlier research was in the field of theoretical solid state physics, primarily studying the effects of atomic imperfections in otherwise perfect semiconductor crystals, such as silicon. His passion for astronomy, a field he has followed closely for over forty years, led to his change in research area to astrophysics, where he currently studies binary stars. For nearly twenty years, Professor DeLeo has directed considerable attention to precollege science outreach in the community and teacher training in the sciences. He presents about 100 science outreach programs per year, and coordinates many others. He loves to share his understanding and appreciation of science, and do it with passion, excitement and laughter. He is the recipient of seven awards and honors for excellence in teaching and outreach. |
| Research: Recent Work: Theory of Binary-Star Systems. Orbital analysis of visual binary systems. Mass flow and ultraviolet spectroscopy of interacting (close) binary stars. Earlier Work: Theory of Defects in Semiconductors and Insulators. Electronic structures, electron-lattice interactions, and optical properties of defects in semiconductors and insulators. Electronic-structure and molecular-dynamics calculations of defects in semiconducting crystals |

| Dr. Glenn Blank
| | Department: | Computer Science |
| Team: | Computer Science |
| Role(s): | Principal Investigator | Project Co-Director | Team Leader | | Bio: Dr. Blank, Associate Professor of Computer Science, is the Principal Investigator (PI) of LV STEM and the faculty team leader for the Computer Science team at Liberty High School in Bethlehem.
He is also PI of an NSF ITEST-sponsored Launch-IT project (www.lehigh.edu/launchit) as well as several related projects sponsored by the Pennsylvania Infrastructure Technology Association (PITA).
He was PI of an NSF project that created Flash-based multimedia e-learning introducing computer science to novices (see www.cse.lehigh.edu/~cimel/prototype.html), associated with the textbook
The Universal Computer: A Multimedia Introducion to Computer Science (see www.cse.lehigh.edu/~glennb/um). |
| Research: Prof. Blank and his students develop intelligent tutoring systems
for object-oriented design (see designfirst.cse.lehigh.edu), debugging and fractions. |
